By now, those of us interested in alternative flooring know all about vinyl and cork tile, and we have all become acquainted with the positive properties associated with them regarding the environment. Yet, some may not have noted that these are not only available at reasonable prices, but are considered simple to install on ones own. Then to top all this goodness off, they can be laid in interesting patterns that make them even more divine.

To put the tiles into place, one will require just a few basic tools. The person doing the work will probably find the most difficult step is the cutting portion, and even that should be minimal. But doing this part oneself can seriously cut down on the expense spent on the entire project.

As for creating interesting patterns, think stripes, houndstooth, diagonals, diamonds and my personal favourite ombre. You can get the tiles in pre-formed packs that contain different shades of the same color, so that part is already done for you. No deliberation over which tones to involve, just the fun of building the designs. In the end you will have a lot to be proud of, and be reminded of your savvy every time you walk into the room. Now who wouldn’t love that bonus?

While you might want carpeted floor, you can’t have them because of the allergies you or a member of your family struggle with. If you are looking for an alternative, cork flooring might be of interest to you. It has many virtues, being durable, easy to maintain, naturally sustainable, comfortable, and attractive. Oh, and of course it has qualities that make it a great option for allergy sufferers.

This material brings warmth to any space, as well as being a good cushion for those who walk upon it. Modern advancements have made cork resistant to damage caused by foot traffic, and on average need little maintenance, because they are coated with a special finish. However, they are not infallible, and should be treated like all other natural flooring.

To harvest cork, only the bark of the tree is removed, which grows back to be re-harvested at a later date. Therefore, it is an environmentally friendly choice. It is also user friendly in that to clean it you need only vacuum, and wipe with a damp mop (without the use of stringent cleaners).

Finally, and the reason we started this discussion; these floors are fungus and bacteria resistant. As well, they do not absorb dust, making then most agreeable to those with allergies or asthma.

Being in the flooring field I am constantly on the look out for the next great thing, or at least the next most intriguing thing. What I found this month was something I have never come across before, and to say it stands out is a definite understatement. I am crazy for this idea, and can’t wait to give a similar project a go myself.

While glass floors themselves are not an altogether new thing, these are the source of what could become a whole new trend in flooring if I have my way about it. I became acquainted with this use of glass as flooring through a photograph that was presented to me by a colleague, as all my contacts are familiar with my great interest in the new and inventive, and I am certainly glad he shared.

Medium sized panels of recycled glass, in fun colours were assembled together to create a block and then laid into the floor. Thus creating a dramatic entryway floor presentation. The colours used included grape, plum, wheat, and leaf. They were inserted between mahogany wood floorboards and together everything worked amazingly well.

Kudos to whomever was the first to do this, hope you are a believer in mimicry as the greatest form of flattery.

Homes are the place where many people want to express their individuality. One way to achieve this quest is through the selection of furniture. Here one can show a fondness for a particular time period, or even current trends. For example, a homeowner that is an admirer of the beach look might opt for oak dining chairs, whereas a follower of modern styles may select red leather dining chairs.

Another way to accurately conveying one’s personal preference to specific designs is through alternative flooring. While in general people decorating their homes will resort to mass produced flooring and flooring covers, there are simple ways to obtain bespoke items that will reflect a truly unique taste. Custom made hallway runners, stair runners, and rugs are the perfect way to place your special stamp on your household’s décor.

Experienced rug makers are readily available to bring your creation to life. With their skill and your vision a totally distinctive type of floor covering can become the defining feature of any space in your home. Nothing holds you back from making exactly what you want other than the effort you put forth, and the extent of your imagination.

Rugs can help to better define areas, such as dinning spaces, and kitchen alcoves. Smaller rugs can give a particularly odd shaped space a new dimension, and distract the eye from the bizarre angles. Larger rugs aid in breaking up big rooms into defined areas, should you be using them for more than one particular purpose. So, the rug, or rugs will set apart the family living space from a home office corner.

And runners can soften the appearance of a particularly long hallway, or break up the monotony of a wooden staircase. Narrow spaces can feel confining, or unwelcoming, but runners in well thought out patterns or colours can make those areas feel roomier and in certain cases shorter in length.

One other thing to think about is the fact that the floors you have may need protecting from everyday traffic, the regular movement of chairs, items spilled or dropped and even the unexpected. And if you are bothering to take steps to guard those floors, you probably appreciate their beauty, as such you will want to enhance the parts that show, and not conceal their appeal. Rugs and runners will help to shield those nice floors, and simultaneously provide equally attractive floor covering.

Finally, one of the best things about having custom rugs and runners made is that they can be taken from one home to the next. Thus, you can bring that decorative feature with you when the time comes.

You may or may not be familiar with the term sprung flooring. This particular type of special floor design is a floating floor that is made to reduce noise, or vibrations. Often it can come in handy in housing structures that are multilevel. A reduction in noise can be critical in some scenarios. In fact, another use for such a floor is to enhance athletic or dance performance.

When used in a home, to buffer the sound caused by walking, mechanical equipment, or physical activity, the floating floor is commonly placed over a subfloor, or a previously established floor. In this instance, the insulation will be comprised of cork, felt or glass fibre. Then there are neoprene pads inserted to support a laminate floor on top.

If the location in which the sprung flooring is being installed is a dance studio, music hall, or theatre the process is slightly different. But it is still highly effective.

So many people are opting to lay their own flooring these days, and this in my opinion can be both a good and a bad thing. The combination of DIY power tools, inexperienced labourers, and temperamental flooring materials can be worrisome. That is why I cannot stress enough that anyone taking on such a project seek as much guidance, and conduct as much research as possible prior to engaging in any work.

Most individuals do not know that there are tools like the stair claw, which in my opinion is simply mandatory when laying carpet over Hollywood stairs. Nor do they know when, or if, they will need a heat bond iron. Not to mention the time and place for a power groover or heat weld gun.

The point is, do your homework to diminish the chance of wasting your time and money. Then, once you have a handle on what needs to be done, and how to do it safely, you can think about using the power tools.

Many people shut down when they hear vinyl mentioned as a flooring option. This is unfortunate because vinyl floor tiles in a kitchen can look magnificent. This material allows you to create custom patterns and designs, or an uninterrupted block of colour. One other pro to selecting vinyl is that this is a great product for advanced diy participants to install.

Another simple way to update kitchen floors is to paint over pre-existing wooden ones. There are many resilient floor paints on the market, so you will not be limited by the choices, and they have proven to be a wonderful alternative to pulling up, or replacing the wood. The only limitations to this approach will be what is accessible in your area, the amount of time you are willing to dedicate, and your imagination.

When it comes to picking out flooring there are two categories the buyers always fall into. Those who are as nonchalant about the whole experience as if they were casually picking out fruit at the market, and those that feel its weight like when deciding whether or not to have more children.

The bunch that easily decides between recycled leather floors and bamboo are for certain to be envied. Personally, I have a great respect for the decisiveness that is expressed by these customers. Mainly, this is because I know deep down inside, that if I did not work in the flooring industry, I would be the person who made the process into a long and arduous one.

So, clearly it is the crew consisting of those who flip through samples for weeks, and even months that I can relate well to. Having never witnessed a customer declare that they made the wrong choice, I must presume that the people who dwell upon and ponder the options truly make good use of that time. Which reassures me that my own approach would be of value also.

Still the funny part is to see how many of the non-dwellers and the dwellers ultimately end up with similar selections.

One of the major incentives is a practical matter. The concrete helps to limit allergens in your indoor area. So, if you, or someone living in your house has allergies, this can be a grand alternative to some of the other flooring that is more common, but harbours allergens such as carpeting. Anybody suffering with allergies can attest to the importance of any steps that can be taken to create help with allergies.

Another attraction that draws people to stained concrete is that the end result can be quite beautiful. For example, the appearance of acid stained concrete has been compared to marble. In addition, there are different colours from which you can choose from to personalize your stain.

One other selling point is that you can stain the concrete yourself, thus minimizing costs. It is substantially easier to complete the work with two people, so be sure to recruit someone to help you. Also, check online for step by step instructions for this process, and then you will be set.
