The world of underfloor heating continues to gain popularity and advance. This of course comes as no surprise to me, but expect that readers will benefit from an explanation as to why this is taking place. Aside from the obvious, that it feels great on the toes, there are plenty of other attributes that make this system of heating a winner.

Underfloor heating is being chosen over more conventional types of heating these days. While it used to be that the word brought to the listener or reader images of great expense and difficult installation or upkeep. Certainly, things did begin that way, as have most of the things we install in our homes today. But, advancements have meant that it is now considered less complex by those installing it, especially after a few runs of it. The experience makes it easier to grasp, and pretty soon it is a preference for some professionals.

On the expense side of things, it is now considered to be an economical way to heat a house for even the average person. It need not be installed throughout the entire structure, and can be isolated with regulator switches from inside the home. If you are unfamiliar with this, visualise a dial with numbers placed next to your light switch. Many are extremely responsive, and there are no elements to confuse even first timers.

One thing less well known about these systems is that they don’t require the same amount of space that other ones do. Plus, since there is never anything released above the flooring itself, it is recoqnised as being great for those suffering with allergies. Others will enjoy the lack of dust that can be created and then kicked around by forced air mechanisms.

My favourite feature are the systems that are accompanied by smart technology. They allow you to set the temperature that you never want the floors to fall below, and automatically it works t retain it. Then, it is also possible to call in via phone to turn it on prior to your arrival. This is extremely popular with the holiday home set.

So, as you can see, what was once believed to be just for the “special people”, those with beaucoup bucks and connections to boast about, it’s no longer so. In due time, I anticipate it will become the more common of all the choices. Well, unless a new invention comes along to trump it, but as we know that will take time to become available to everyday homeowners.

During the process of choosing floors, doors and cabinets for a new home the accessories that they come with is often overlooked. Take hardwood doors for example. When speaking with those in the know, the hardware, or accessories are referred to as door furniture. If you purchase a lovely wood, but do not take similar care and attention with the door furniture what you imagine in your head may not be quite the same when it arrives in person. There is good reason to pay sufficient attention to these details to ensure you are sticking to the plan that you have intended to see to fruition from top to bottom.

Though it might seem like a small, basically inconsequential decision it can in fact pack quite the powerful punch when chosen properly, or improperly. Actually, I think this is pretty well expressed in the names for which some levers, handles and bolts are given. When you see something with a swanky, high profile title like The Ambassador (from Flooring and Doors) you can almost rely on your impression that it will project a refined appearance. This is crucial if this is the style of the room. On the other hand, should you encounter a handle with the title of Gothic (also from Flooring and Doors), you can expect that it will be best suited to something less grand and more basic in design.

Another reason to be attentive to this selection is that sometimes the focus can fall upon the wood alone, and others that can be detracted by the flawed pairing of the wrong type of door knob, knocker, or hinge. Think of the beauty of a particularly defined wood grain and how it could be ignored if eyes go immediately to a gaudy or odd handle. Nope, it just won’t do the beauty of the wood justice, and could be it’s downfall. Allow the hardwood to receive the glory it deserves by doing your part to confirm its door furniture is just right.

Some of the biggest names in design continue to put their stamp on flooring. One of the most interesting creations I have seen recently is that of fashion / art designer Olle Hemmendorff, the formation was one of a kind. From what I’ve gathered, this Swedish artist reached a point with the bland light wooden floors in his own home of no return. He needed to conceal them, cover them with something more attractive, but make no permanent alterations.

To do this, he first covered the wood with sticky white plastic. Apparently, this was equally unsuitable, as he was driven to alter that also. Without a formal plan, or even any sketches, he transformed the floors with a fat black marker. So what did he draw? Wooden floors, but not just any wood flooring, it is like an illustration from a children’s book. Quirky would definitely be one word to describe the alligator who is climbing through the boards, and the iron pot with fried eggs inside.

As for the durability of the whole thing, well that does not seem to be of much consequence to Hemmendorff. He has stated that he realises that while the original wooden flooring is not his thing, it may prove to be that of any potential buyers in the future. So, when the time comes the option to pull up his drawing is a wonderful thing.

It must be amazing to be this creative, and to live amongst your own work on a daily basis. Our hats are off to you Mr. Hemmendorff, thanks for showing us what is possible.

London is one of the best places to settle in the UK. Buying a new house in London is not difficult, since new homes London agents are plenty on the internet. The best London new homes give you access to all major public utilities such as water, electricity and a transport facility. However, you need to consider a few things before moving in to your London new home.

Your budget is the first factor to consider when buying a new home. Renting is cheaper than buying, if you consider your short term budget. Draw a long term budget that includes all the costs involved in the process of buying a new house. The more expensive the house, the higher the taxes. You also need to consider the cost of the house, the furniture, surveyors, stamp duty, furnishings and solicitors. All these are reflected in your list of expenses. The question you need to ask yourself is how you can save money on London new homes. The answer is simple: be creative. The following are some of the tips on how you can save on London new homes.

Ask a friend to recommend a solicitor.

Solicitors are important agents in the process of buying new homes. New homes London solicitors can be very expensive. Hiring a bad solicitor can be very costly. However, if you get a direct referral, you will never regret. This is also a good opportunity to bargain, since they are very flexible. An experienced solicitor will help you evade all unnecessary costs involved in buying London new homes.

Consider getting a mortgage

Mortgages are some of the most efficient strategies of owning a new house. Shopping for a good mortgage will save you a lot of headache. Instead of paying for a new house at once, pay in small, affordable instalments for your new home. This is also a legal way of evading some forms of taxes. In addition, you will get a brand new home that does not require repairs and renovations of broken windows or faulty doors.

Sell your old furniture

You will have to move from your old home to your new home. Moving is very expensive especially if you are moving along with all your belongings. Second hand furniture stores can pay you well in exchange for your old furniture. You can add a small amount of money to buy new furniture for your new home in London.

Choose a safe area

London is a good area to settle, whether you are single, married, childless or have a family. There are no restrictions on the number of people who can buy London new homes. However, some regions are prone to disasters such as floods. Disasters can cost you a huge sum of money. Therefore, as you shop for your new home, choose one that is free from disasters. However, an insurance cover is a good disaster management strategy. Always get one for new homes London.

London new homes agents are available online, and resources for new home owners are everywhere on the internet. Take time to read through the available newsletters to know more about your neighbourhood and you will enjoy your stay in your London new home.

To us, nothing says contemporary in the world of carpeting like patterns. In case you haven’t noticed we are all about the pattern (see January post). Most importantly, we are huge supporters of the do it yourself floor pattern. So, as a follow up to our last article we have decided to share with you how to create a basket weave pattern with carpet tiles. Exciting, we know. And we guarantee that you will get more props for this achievement than you ever thought possible for such a DIY home improvement project.

The materials consist of one color (say grey) full sized carpet tiles, another color (say chocolate) full sized carpet tiles, and one color (say red) quarter sized carpet tiles. If you want to get even funkier, alternate the texture of the tiles (say a plusher grey tile). A basket weave in energetic colors will of course produce a very different result than one made up of tender ones. We strongly recommend giving the color combinations you are considering a test drive in a flooring store. You might even get a shop representative who has some good ideas. You never know, and the ability to see the colors next to one another will allow you to sleep easier once you have placed your order for those tiles.

By now, those of us interested in alternative flooring know all about vinyl and cork tile, and we have all become acquainted with the positive properties associated with them regarding the environment. Yet, some may not have noted that these are not only available at reasonable prices, but are considered simple to install on ones own. Then to top all this goodness off, they can be laid in interesting patterns that make them even more divine.

To put the tiles into place, one will require just a few basic tools. The person doing the work will probably find the most difficult step is the cutting portion, and even that should be minimal. But doing this part oneself can seriously cut down on the expense spent on the entire project.

As for creating interesting patterns, think stripes, houndstooth, diagonals, diamonds and my personal favourite ombre. You can get the tiles in pre-formed packs that contain different shades of the same color, so that part is already done for you. No deliberation over which tones to involve, just the fun of building the designs. In the end you will have a lot to be proud of, and be reminded of your savvy every time you walk into the room. Now who wouldn’t love that bonus?

While you might want carpeted floor, you can’t have them because of the allergies you or a member of your family struggle with. If you are looking for an alternative, cork flooring might be of interest to you. It has many virtues, being durable, easy to maintain, naturally sustainable, comfortable, and attractive. Oh, and of course it has qualities that make it a great option for allergy sufferers.

This material brings warmth to any space, as well as being a good cushion for those who walk upon it. Modern advancements have made cork resistant to damage caused by foot traffic, and on average need little maintenance, because they are coated with a special finish. However, they are not infallible, and should be treated like all other natural flooring.

To harvest cork, only the bark of the tree is removed, which grows back to be re-harvested at a later date. Therefore, it is an environmentally friendly choice. It is also user friendly in that to clean it you need only vacuum, and wipe with a damp mop (without the use of stringent cleaners).

Finally, and the reason we started this discussion; these floors are fungus and bacteria resistant. As well, they do not absorb dust, making then most agreeable to those with allergies or asthma.

In today’s world we’re given an awful lot of choices and sometimes it can seem overwhelming to pick from the huge amount of options that are on offer. We spend around half of our lives sleeping, so when it comes to picking a new mattress we want to make sure that we are picking the right one.

Mattresses have come a long way over the last few years, so there’s a greater choice than ever. If you’re currently on the hunt for that perfect mattress, then you’ll need to know exactly what’s on offer. Here’s a quick guide to the various different types of mattress that you have to choose from.

First, sprung mattresses. There are two different types of sprung mattress on the market at the moment. These are the open spring mattresses, which are the most popular mattress type in the world. These mattresses consist of hundreds, or even thousands, of springs in a wire frame, covered in a comfortable, padded material. This type of mattress tends to be quite cheap but doesn’t offer the support and durability of some other types.

The other type of sprung mattress is the pocket spring mattress. This type of mattress is similar to the open spring but instead of hundreds of loose springs, they are all individually housed in a fabric pocket. This allows for better weight distribution and they generally last longer than open spring mattresses, because the springs are less likely to get bent out of shape.

Memory foam mattresses are an increasingly popular option. They are made with heat reactive memory foam, which moulds around your body and adapts to whichever position you adopt. This is great for those who suffer with joint pain as, essentially, memory foam eliminates pressure points. Memory foam is also hypo allergenic and dust mite resistant.
Latex mattresses are very similar in nature to memory foam mattresses. However, latex mattresses differ in that they spring back a lot quicker than memory foam mattresses, which can eliminate some of the complaints geared at memory foam mattress users who say that they find it difficult to adjust position during the night. Latex mattresses also require less turning than more traditional mattresses.

It has been reported that underfloor heating is becoming a strong contender in the list of things landlords are adding to rental properties to entice tenants. Because of the building boom, there are now tons of rentals on the market, so landlords are turning to luxuries. But, of course not just any luxurious additions will do, a valid return on the investment must be the goal, and underfloor heating is proving to be just that.

These supplemented features, such as larger bathtubs, rainshowers, and updated / upgraded appliances not only work to attract tenants, they function to entice certain tentants, the upwardly mobile kind. The very ones that so often turn out to be the most reliable and preferred sort. Underfloor heating makes good sense all around, and it comes as no surprise to us that it is a draw for residents.

Plus, should the property be placed for sale later on, this will still be a well founded perk for a new buyer. Now, anything that should improve value both short and long term sounds like a very good investment.

Choosing the flooring for a kitchen is quite different from choosing the flooring for a bedroom, living room, or dinning room. Obviously, you have to consider the involvement of water, and cooking, but there is even more to consider, and you should definitely be aware of that prior to making any decisions. Then amongst the list of things to be concerned with, target which are the most important to you and your family. Lots to think over, but well worth it in the long haul. We believe this is the room that can be the most difficult to decide the flooring for, so once you’ve achieved this the rest should be a cake walk.

For example, the kitchen is the room where you spend the most time standing, working on creating dishes, cleaning dishes, putting away dishes, well you get the idea. Therefore, it is in your best interest to think about the flooring options that will be easy on the body. By taking this step, pardon the pun, your feet, legs, knees, and back will be happier. Wondering which floors might be agreeable? Well, we recommend investigating wood, laminate, vinyl, and think it best to skip ceramic tiles altogether if you are eager to eliminate leg discomfort, easily broken dishes, discoloured grout, and foot traffic noise.
